Notes on Craft: Patience and the Long Game
Some things we keep relearning, in slightly new shapes, every year. Written down here so we stop having to relearn them.
The first idea is rarely the idea
First ideas are usually echoes of what everyone else has already made. The good one lives a few drafts deeper, after you have burned through the obvious. We plan shoots knowing the best frame probably has not been imagined yet.
Repetition is how style forms
Style is not something you invent at the start. It is what survives when you have made the same kind of thing a hundred times and finally know exactly what you are trying to say. We do not chase a look. We keep working, and the look finds us.
Restraint is the hardest skill
Adding is easy. The discipline of leaving things out — the extra caption, the fifth transition, the trend that does not fit — is what separates work that ages well from work that merely performed once.
Ship, then sharpen
Perfectionism delayed is just procrastination with better lighting. We publish the good version today and make the next one better. The long game is made of small, finished things.
This journal is where we will keep these notes. Some will age, some will not, and we will leave both up — that is part of the practice too.
